International Workshop on the European Atlas of Natural Radiation

Dear Colleagues,

We are delighted to announce that the International Workshop on the European Atlas of Natural Radiation (IWEANR 2015) will be held in the town of Verbania, Italy, from Monday 9 November at 14:00 to Friday 13 November at 12:00. The main aim of the workshop is to present the status and discuss progress of the European Atlas of Natural Radiation project.
Verbania
Known as the “garden on the lake”, Verbania is located on the western shore of Lake Maggiore in the Piedmont region.

Hotel
The workshop will take place in Hotel Il Chiostro, a former monastery converted into a modern hotel and situated in a quiet area only a few minutes’ walk from the lakeside.



Workshop topics and timetable

The workshop is divided into two sections, which may be attended independently:

1. European Indoor Radon Map Monday 9 Nov 14:00 – Tuesday 10 Nov 12:00

This section will mainly be aimed at identifying new participants to the map.
  • Current status
  • Outstanding issues for countries with existing databases
  • Policies and plans for surveys
  • Data preparation and transfer to JRC
2. Geogenic Radiation Tuesday 10 November 14:00– Friday 13 November 12:00
  • U, Th and K concentrations in bedrock and soil.
  • Terrestrial gamma dose rate.
  • Soil radon: databases; importance of permeability; radon potential.
  • Outdoor radon: existing databases; methodology; possible uses.
  • Geology: databases; simplified geological classification; using geology as predictor.
  • Relationship between all these quantities and indoor radon, and radon risk index.

Registration for workshop, hotel, transport and social activities

We invite all participants to register through the JRC Meeting Management System (MMS) and to reserve their hotel accommodation in Hotel Il Chiostro - www.chiostrovb.it, as well as transportation between the airport (Malpensa or Linate) to the hotel and back; see the instructions below.

The registration is important for us to organize the event and local transportation; therefore it is required for all workshop participants. We have blocked a number of hotel rooms for you in the hotel. The JRC will organize transportation (free of charge) from Malpensa airport to Verbania and vice versa.

On Thursday evening, the JRC invites you to a social dinner at Il Chiostro; to allow us to organize it, you are kindly requested to indicate your participation through the JRC Meeting Management System (MMS).

The optional field trip will visit the last remaining white marble quarry, located in Mergozzo near Verbania. See below for detailed information. This trip is also free of charge; please register through the JRC Meeting Management System (MMS) if you are interested.

Deadline
The deadline for registration has been set to Sunday 4 October 2015.

Workshop fee
This workshop is free of charge to all participants.

Workshop registration instructions

Registration for the International Workshop on the European Atlas of Natural Radiation (IWEANR 2015), 9-13/11/2015 is now possible via:
https://web.jrc.ec.europa.eu/rem/

If you are a first-time user of this system, create your personal account. Please pay attention to fill in correctly your mailing information, as this will be used by the conference organizers to produce a participants list. When this is done, you should be logged on.

If you already registered earlier, fill in your user id and password and check your personal information: click on your name at the left top corner just under the menu bar to access your account.  

From the menu bar, filter on “Ispra” site and then select “International Workshop on the European Atlas of Natural Radiation”:
Accept the Events Registration Statement to proceed;
Next continue by filling out the details of the registration:
Under “local transportation”, indicate if you need transport from the airport (Malpensa or Linate) to the hotel and back. After the closure of the registration, you will receive further information about the timing and means.
When activating “I need accommodation” :
A single room (50 €) breakfast included
Double Room (80€) breakfast included
Under “Additional events” indicate if you wish to participate to:
Social Dinner – offered by JRC for the participants
Visit to the granite quarry – free of charge for the participants Register.

Transport information from the airport (Malpensa or Linate) to the hotel and back

Being the closest international airport to Verbania, Italy, flying into Milan Malpensa is recommended. The airport is located 64 km from Verbania.

The JRC will organise shuttle services or buses for participants staying at the suggested hotel – free of charge. The departure times of the transportation means will be communicated after the registration deadline in a due time.

FIELD TRIP TO THE “BIANCO MONTORFANO srl” GRANITE QUARRY (MERGOZZO, ITALY)
This white granite (the Granito Bianco Montorfano) has ben extensively quarried since the 16th century. It contributes to the architectural heritage of Milano and Torino, and many other cities of northern Italy.

In this optional post-conference activity we will visit the last active quarry of the Montorfano white granite
